2.32     understand oxidation and reduction as the addition and removal of oxygen respectively

Oxidation is the gain / addition of oxygen.  Reduction is the loss / removal of oxygen.

Note this is the opposite to the case for electrons (Section 1.29) where oxidation is the loss of electrons and reduction is gain of electrons (OIL RIG).
