5.18 describe some uses for polymers,
including poly(ethene), poly(propene) and poly(chloroethene)
Poly(ethene) is used for plastic bags and
bottles and clingfilm.
Poly(propene) is stronger and is used for making
buckets, crates, ropes and carpet fibres.
Poly(chloroethene) is used for drainpipes and
gutters, window and door frames and electrical insulation. (The old name for this plastic is poly vinyl
chloride – PVC.)
