to allow nitrogen and oxygen from air to react, forming
nitrogen oxides
Nitrogen is a very unreactive gas and will not react
with oxygen unless the temperature is very high. The temperature inside a car engine is high
enough for some nitrogen to combine with oxygen to form oxides like nitrogen
monoxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
