1.35 understand the relationship between ionic charge and the melting point and boiling point of an ionic compound



The higher the charges the stronger the attractions between the ions, which in turn means higher melting points. So, MgO (with 2+ and 2- charges on the ions) has a higher melting point than NaCl (with 1+ and 1- charges), for example.
