1.42   explain why substances with simple molecular structures have low melting points in terms of the relatively weak forces between the molecules

Simple molecular structures are made from lots if individual molecules, Covalent bonds between atoms within the molecules are strong but these do not break when a substance melts (or boils). There are weak forces of attraction between molecules, and it is these weak attractions that are “broken”, allowing the molecules to move apart.
