1.6 understand the differences between elements, compounds and mixtures



·        An element is a substance that is made up of only one kind of atom and cannot be split up into anything simpler by chemical means.

·        A compound is a substance that is made up of two or more elements joined by strong (chemical) bonds in fixed proportions.

·        A mixture is two or more different substances (elements or compounds) together in varying proportion.
